Death metal with an onyx sheen channeling ancient Egypt is the order of the day for the Colorado duo Akhenaten. Intricate riffing and unusual scales, with some of the most interesting guitar effects this side of the Sphinx’s stare have helped the band to craft an album that stands out not just among it’s peers in the United States, but across the world.
Taking obvious influence from actual Egyptian history, the lyrics center there, as well as the overall sound. It’s almost as if Nile decided to step away from the technical death and approach their themes more from a blackened point of view, or if Akhenaten were an American version of Al-Namrood. When listening to Akhenaten I can nearly feel the hot sands of the ancient Egyptian landscape under my feet; watch the Great Pyramids rise before me; be surrounded by the honored, mummified dead.
Some of my favourite songs from the album are “Annunaki”, “Ninurta: The Fall of Anzu”, and their amazing cover of Septicflesh‘s “Anubis”.
Fans of Al-Namrood, Melechesh, and Rudra, as well as even Seeds of Iblis and Absu will find the sound of Akhenaten captivating. This is a band that will be getting a lot of listens from me, and I’m excited to hear what they have in store for the future.
